ESTATE PLANNING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
No matter where you are in life, the holidays remind us of the things that are important to us; the things we need to protect. That’s why we think the holidays are the perfect time to think about wills and estate planning.
An estate plan can include any combination of a will, powers of attorney, special deeds for real estate, a set of documents called advance directives, and other estate planning forms.
A new poll shows fewer than half of U.S. adults (46%) have a valid will detailing how they would like their money and estate to be handled after their death. (Gallop Poll)
The pandemic has changed the nation’s perspective on many things, and estate planning is definitely one of them. People from all walks of life are reevaluating how they live and what happens to them after life.
Although the overall percentage of people with a will hasn’t changed since last year, the number of young adults with a will increased by 63% since 2020. (Caring’s 2021 Estate Planning and Wills Survey) Also, in 2021, 18-34 year-olds are, for the first time, more likely to have a will than 35 – 54 year-olds.
Surprisingly, 18-34 year-olds are now 16% more likely to have a will than those in the 35-54 age group.
If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that we need to have a plan because life is unpredictable. Next year we hope to see the number of wills increase across all demographics.
