Are you or someone you know going through a divorce? Our team of Divorce Attorneys and Family Law Professionals have put together a list of shows and movies to comfort, encourage and even inspire someone going through a divorce.
After talking to our clients, we found that many like to talk to friends and family about the divorce but they also like to have moments alone to process the divorce journey by themselves.
In this golden age of streaming, watching a show or a movie can bring comfort to someone going through a divorce and allow time for introspection on the past. More importantly, these shows and movies can help someone going through a divorce see that this is the beginning of a new chapter.
We hope these shows and movies will not just bring comfort but inspiration to anyone thinking of or going through a divorce.
SHOWS/SERIES
FISK (2023) - NETFLIX
At the top of the Netflix charts right now, Fisk is a show that checks all the boxes for us; divorce and probate. This is a light hearted, witty and simple comedy about a recently divorced woman beginning work at a small business Probate Law office. This is an easy and relateable divorce show that should help you begin your divorce binge watching.
SHRINKING (2023) - APPLE TV+
This is a great show about personal growth and pushing yourself to do things that might make you uncomfortable but that will help you grow into a better version of yourself. A grieving therapist starts to tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making different kinds of changes to his own life.
AND JUST LIKE THAT (2021) - MAX
This series follows Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s after divorce and life hits them.
SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE (2021) - MAX & HULU
This mini series is the adaptation of a 1970's Swedish serries by the same name. This version re-examines love, marriage and divorce in a dramatic way through the lens of a modern relationship.
SWEET MAGNOLIAS (2020) - NETFLIX
Set in a quaint little town, sweet magnolias follows a recently divorced woman and her best friends as they navigate life and the drama of a small town.
GRACE AND FRANKIE (2015) - NETFLIX
If you need to laugh a lot and cry a little, Grace and Frankie is a great show about divorce, family and above all the friendships that last. Getting divorced at an older age does not mean the end of your journey.
DIVORCE (2016) - MAX (HBO)
In this "divorce" themed, series a couple goes through a long-drawn out divorce. Set in New York, it examines the idea of the "never-ending" marriage.
BETTER THINGS (2016) - HULU
In this seris a divorced mother, balancing her acting career sets out to find better things after divorce. Hopefully this inspires you to find better things for yourself too.
GIRLFRIEND'S GUIDE TO DIVORCE (2014) - APPLE TV
Acclimating to being single in her 40s, a recently divorced woman turns to her friends for advice.
THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE (2006) - SLING
In this show, a divorced mom navigates her life when her ex-husband gets a new girlfriend. This divorce themed show is relateable and funny.
MOVIES
HAPPIENESS FOR BEGINNERS (2023) - NETFLIX
Based on a wonderful novel, which we also reccomend, this feel-good, outdorsy rom-com film is about a recently divorced woman going on a wilderness journey. The beautiful outdoor scenes will surely bring you calm and a little joy.
THE BAR FIGHT (2022) - HULU
Bar Fight is a down-to-earth, realistic, glimps into a modern day relationship and break up. This one should leave you with a sense of closure and inspiration for your next step in life after divorce.
THINGS TO COME (2016) - AMC+, AMAZON PRIME
This beautifully raw and complicated film will get your emotions flowing. A woman finds herself with unexpected and unusual freedom after a series of seperations. We hope this encourages you to find freedom of your own kind.
CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011)
Crazy, Stupid, Love is sure to one day be a classic divorce go-to. This film will make you laugh and cry and laugh again. With a wonderful cast and an incredible weaving story, this film should leave you hopeful for the future.
IT'S COMPLICATED (2009) - NETFLIX
This light-hearted film about a divorced couple is filled has a great cast. It's humor makes fun of the very relatable way relationships are well...complicated.
UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN (2006) - YOUTUBE PRIMETIME
This film is great if you want to take your mind to Italy and escape for a bit while you watch someone else navigate divorce.
ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000) - TUBI
See what a twice-divorced mother of three can do in this great film. We think it will leave you motivated.
HOPE FLOATS (1998) - APPLE TV, YOUTUBE
This film covers so many topics we commonly see with our divorce clients. After an affair, a small town woman picks up her life and continues on. We "hope" this leaves you "hopeful" for your own new journey after divorce.
BYE BYE LOVE (1995)
The whole theme of this film centers around divorce from the perspective of three divorced men.
BETRAYAL (1983) - AMAZON PRIME
This isn't a feel-good movie but it is a classic divorce film. One of the earlier stories using reverse chronology, this film will make you feel all the feels and hopefully gain a little perspective on how time effects divorce and relationships.
